Registered Massage Therapy
Registered Massage Therapy is a regulated health profession in Ontario. RMT’s are registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) and have completed competency-based education, studied anatomy, physiology, pathology, assessment, treatments practices and more. They have also completed 150 clinical hours in a supervised setting and successfully completed examinations through the CMTO.
A Registered Massage Therapist is a primary healthcare provider in Ontario and anyone may visit an RMT of their choice for a variety musculo-skeletal ailments. Referrals or prescriptions and not required, however your insurance company may request this for reimbursement.
Massage Therapy is the manipulation of soft tissues (muscles, tendons, connective tissues, ligaments and joints) in the body. It is a clinically-oriented healthcare option that may help alleviate discomfort associated with every day or occupational stresses, muscular over-use and some chronic pain conditions. Registered Massage Therapy may be used to treat both acute and chronic conditions and can help with a wide variety of different illnesses, injuries and disabilities.
When visiting an RMT you will be asked to fill out an in depth health history from and may have to participate in some forms of assessment to ensure that the RMT can provide the safe and effective treatment. The treatment performed will depend on the information that is collected. Treatments can vary in terms of duration, frequency, intensity, and types, there may also be some additional modalities that may be indicated such as heat, cold, or stretch to name a few.
